We all awoke early on our road trip day and decided to walk down to the same cafe as the previous day. We made it down to Apex Car Rentals for 10am but they were really busy so we had to wait. Eventually we got served and were handed the keys to the ‘Tang!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’ ......... whoops, I mean the Nissan Sunny!!!! Yeah I know.... awesome!!
I decided to drive first, just driving us to the hotel to collect our bags from the hotel. The boot looked big enough when we first looked at it but it must have shrunk on our drive back??!! We did get everything in but after loads of jiggling about. That was it, we were ready for our road trip!
Ben decided to take to the wheel and we headed off down the ‘1’. The scenery was an amazing start, sweeping hills, very green fields, houses just dotted around and miles between neighbours. The weather was fine, bit cloudy but just warm enough for a t-shirt..... just!!
We pulled into a little town called Tairua and decided to have a look at the little Bakery there. We each got a pie and ate it on the benches outside. When we finished them we had a walk down by the water’s edge and stood and watched the many jet skis and boats sailing the river. We walked right up to the town and had a wander through the shops. It was Easter Sunday and it had a lovely atmosphere. We then walked back to the ‘Sunny!’ and drove onwards.
Our next stop was Cathedral Cove. By now it was cloudy and spitting ever so slightly. It was packed with cars and people. We eventually got parked and we walked down to the lookout. Cathedral Cove is actually a limestone Arch and natural waterfall. We only got to see it from the lookout and mostly took in the view of the many little islands. We didn’t hang around long and jumped back into the car and headed for Hot Water Beach.
Hot Water Beach is a beach where for 2 hours either side of low tide, you can dig yourself a hole in the sand and hot water oozes to the surface. It’s something to do with the natural gases under the surface. Gets pretty hot apparently!! We weren’t dressed for it and didn’t want to cross the water to get there so we opted for coffee and cake instead. It was lovely sitting in the cafe grounds, enjoying a brew, with Ben and Dad having some cake. We jumped back into the car and headed for our last stop ... Whitianga.
Mum and Dad had already pre-booked there accommodation and luckily they’d booked 2 rooms, as most of the places there were fully booked. The only room me and Ben got offered, was a bunk sharing with 3 others........ nice! We checked in and had an hour chilling. We met up around 7ish and decided to visit the Mercury Bay Club for the $15 carvery deal. We didn’t have a clue what to do upon arriving, we had to become members for the night! We even had to pick our own glasses before choosing a drink.......what’s that all about?! To be fair it was cheap and we all got a drink and the worst food ever.... all for under $30 !! We even got to listen to the worse bit of jazz music ever as were sitting right under the speaker. Well Dad and Ben sat first and decided they’d move one seat up the table, so me and Mum had the speaker instead! Thanks guy’s!!
After rather a quick meal we ran from the club and headed back to the Motel for a few games of Uno.
