Archie's Bunker and Art Deco ..... stepping back in time !

It was an early start as we had to walk into the centre to catch the bus. Ben walked to get us a brew whilst I waited with the bags.

The bus came just before 8am and we managed to get front seats. There was no hanging around, a quick head count by Greg and we were off to Napier.

It was slightly overcast as we set off but stayed dry. Our first stop was at Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre. We didn’t choose to go in so we had our breakfast of a toastie and a brew. It was a 45 minutes stop and then onwards.

It’s ANZAC day today so we passed through some parades. Our next stop was just a wee stop for 10 minutes and then through all the vineyards and orchards to Napier.

By now the weather was lovely, sunny and hot. We arrived at Archie’s Bunker Backpackers at 1.15pm. We’ve got a double ensuite room but it’s also got 2 sets of bunk beds along with a TV and DVD player!!

We left our bags and had a walk through the town to the supermarket. It’s an art deco town, which was rebuilt after an earthquake in the 1930’s. Everything looks so old fashioned. In February they close off all the streets and everyone dresses up in 1930’s clothing. They have massive searchlights on the beach and bands playing. They only allow cars younger than the 1940’s on the streets. It such a cool feeling town.

We took our shopping back to the hostel and made some sandwiches for lunch. We ate them by the foreshore in a little park. There was some live music on in the Sound Shell, so we listened to that whilst we ate.

We had a walk up the boardwalk after dinner, bumping into a car boot sale. After a little ratch through, we watched the young un’s having a ball in the SK8 park. A massive area full of ramps, pipes and kids flying about on scooters and skateboards.

We carried on up the shore before turning back and going back to the hostel for the first of our DVD’s.
