Arriving in Queenstown and Strawberry Cheesecake !

At 9am we were all heading out again on the ‘1’. We filled up with petrol and were heading south again. The views were so different, the roads were so straight! We were soon clocking up the km’s. We had a few lookouts to pull over and take a photo.

Then we came across Lake Tekapo, it was right in the middle of the valley. The water so turquoise and still. It was deadly quiet. We decided to get a coffee and take it down by the lakeside. Some ducks came over to see what food we had, but soon disappeared when they realised we had nothing. After a few group photos and me carving our names in the picnic bench, we went back to the car and headed southwards. The lake was huge and we stopped a few times along it for photos.

We came across Lake Pukaki, the water was cloudy, apparently caused by the rock sediment created by the glacier........or something like that!

After more photo’s we headed on again along the awesome roads. Wasn’t long before we entered the town of Twizel. We parked the car and went to the local bakery/cafe for some lunch. We sat outside and enjoyed the sun on our faces. It had started off really chilly and fresh in the morning but by now it was really warm. After a go in the children’s play area, we were off again.

We didn’t seem to get very far and then pulling of the road for the view, amazing. The snow was atop some of the mountains, it looked so pretty. We pulled round a corner and came upon a river rapid, right down through the valley. Pulling over we crossed the bridge over the Shotover River, it’s where they have jet boats take you through the canyon. You can pan for gold there too. We had yet another brew and even got friendly with the deaf dog at the cafe. By now the sun was hiding behind the hills and it was feeling a bit fresher so we didn’t stay out for long.

Back in the car with only 60km’s to go. After a few more photo stops, we arrived at Queenstown. Making it in time at the Tourist Information to book accommodation for the night. Within 5 minutes of booking it we were collecting the keys and putting our bags in our 2 bedroomed apartment. Very nice it was too. After having yet another brew, it was off to the supermarket for some bread, cheese and beans........ oh and a strawberry cheesecake for pudding!!

Seems a nice city, although we’re not going to have much time to see it as yet. Heading south and catch it on the way back up again. Just weird looking out of our window and seeing parachutes landing on the field opposite!!
