Stowing away at Auckland Airport and meeting the Hines Seniors !

We both passed through Border Patrol with not a glitch, we were there! We only had 7 hours until Mum and Dad H arrived, so we decided to stow away at the airport. Luckily there were flights throughout the night so we blended in and watched the NZ1 flight from London/Los Angeles move up the screen.

We’d met Andrew, a Brit on the flight and he joined us in stowing away for the night.... very cheap accommodation!! Me and Ben also took use of the FREE showers at the airport to freshen up. The time went really quickly, considering we’d not slept. We watched as the flight flashed up “LANDED!”.

After a nerve wrecking and excited hour we watched Mum and Dad walk through the arrivals. We shouted but there was a man proposing in the way so we were all distracted. We sniped (we thought!) along but eagle eye mum saw spotted us before we got to them. Wow, they both looked so good.

We all decided to head to the hotel and catch up. We caught the shuttle bus and it dropped us four off first. It was all a bit bizarre. Just being in the airports and then seeing Mum and Dad, it all seemed unreal. We couldn’t check into our room but we could leave our bags and headed to the hotel restaurant for a coffee. Dad opened his cards as it was his 60th birthday on the 1st April. He’d thought he’d had a longer birthday with all the time differences, but when we worked it all out it was only half a birthday.... not fair!

We thought some fresh air would do us all good and walked it from Parnell to the city. Calling in at the Rose Gardens and the park. We carried on into the city stopping off for a coffee (caffeine to keep us all awake!). We called in and got some car hire quotes and continued on. We were taking in the sights and just managing to stay awake, the jet lag was starting take over.

We saw the HUGE Auckland Sky Tower and then saw someone jump off from the top! It was ok though, he was strapped in and doing the Sky Jump. A 192m jump/forward abseil from the observation deck, straight to the floor..... looks amazing fun. We stayed and watched a couple more jumpers before carrying on exploring.

We had a walk down to the Auckland Harbour, it was beautiful with all the lovely boats and lots of nice little cafes and restaurants along the edge. We called into a coffee shop and enjoyed a muffin and a drink. After nearly falling asleep AGAIN we decided to head back to the hotel to all freshen up.

We headed back onto Parnell Road, which is a street of hip cafes and restaurants. It was Good Friday so not many were open, we did agree on Portchetta’s, an Italian Restaurant. Pizza and pasta, very nice! And we’d all made it until 7pm.

By the time we got back to the hotel, we were knackered!! We all decided to call it a night and try and get a good night sleep. Just getting used to the time difference, we read on our return to the hotel that it was ‘Daylight Savings!’ and the clocks went back an hour. Not a good thing to do with jetlag really ... changing the clocks.
